Look beyond the rate
The cheapest rate rarely means the lowest cost. Failed calls, stripped CLI and congestion all carry a price that does not appear on a rate deck. Evaluate carriers on quality and operations as well as commercials.
An evaluation checklist
- Route quality: published ASR, ACD and PDD, with CLI options per destination.
- Resilience: geo-redundant points of presence and automatic failover.
- Transparency: real-time CDRs and dashboards, not month-end surprises.
- Fraud controls: profiling, spend caps and anomaly detection as standard.
- Commercials: current rate decks and usage-based billing.
- Support: direct access to routing specialists.
- Compliance: a clear acceptable-use policy and regulatory awareness.
Test before you commit
A good carrier will provision test routes quickly so you can measure quality on your own traffic before scaling. Treat onboarding speed and willingness to be measured as signals in themselves.
